Labelling

If the requirement is verified with a label, check that there is a valid license for the product in question. This can be controlled here: Nordic Swan Ecolabel, Good Environmental Choice and EU Ecolabel.

Product's declaration of contents

Check the product's declaration of contents; it shall, in accordance with the Detergents regulation 648/2004, show composition in weight percent. Make sure that the word perfume is not present or that perfumes that shall be declared according to Regulation (EC) No 648/2004 on detergents are not included.

For products that are not covered by the Detergents Regulation, for example products that do not have a cleaning effect, check the declaration of contents with the composition in weight percent.

Self-declaration verified by an accredited verification body

If a verified self-declaration is used to prove that the requirement is fulfilled, request the supplier’s self-declaration, including documentation showing that the requirement is met. The self-declaration shall be verified by a verification body accredited for the task in accordance with ISO / IEC 17029 or equivalent standard.

This requirement cannot be used together with requirement ID 10585:1 Perfume.

Note that all product types are not available as perfume-free, such as toilet blocks. When procuring these product types, they must be exempted from the requirement. State that the requirement for perfume (10585:1) applies to these products instead.

There are currently a limited number of accredited verification bodies for ISO/IEC 17029 (Conformity assessment - General principles and requirements for validation and verification bodies) as it is a relatively new standard. This may change, especially if the demand for verifying compliance in this way increases. More information about the standard and accredited verification bodies can be found on Swedac's website.

Perfumes do not have a cleaning effect in the products, they are added to contribute with fragrance.

The proportion of people with respiratory hypersensitivity to, for example, strong scents is increasing and these individuals should have the opportunity be able to stay in a public environment without being exposed to perfumes. In ordet to avoid more people getting allergies or allergic persons getting allergic reactions, perfumed products should be avoided. It is usually possible to manufacture products from raw materials of high quality that do not have an odour.

Another aspect to consider is that most perfumes also have other negative properties, for example contain environmentally hazardous substances and have bioaccumulative properties, i.e. they can accumulate in biological organisms and become concentrated further upwards in the food chains. This is an additional motive for requesting unscented products.

The version date indicates when the sustainability criterion was created or last updated. Last reviewed dated tells when we last checked that the sustainability criterion still is relevant.
