Feed without fish raw material - chicken
Level: Core
Most of the fish used for fishmeal comes from unsustainable fishing. Overfishing can result in the collapse of marine ecosystems and adversely affect marine biodiversity. Avoiding fishmeal in feed can help reduce the demand for fishmeal.

Criterion text
Chicken raw material shall come from animals that have been given feeds containing no fish raw material throughout the entire rearing process.
Verification
The supplier shall be able to provide one of the following on request, for example:
- Valid licence/certificate for any of the following labels/certifications or equivalent certification
- Svensk Fågel
- IP Sigill broiler and eggs
Proposed follow-up
Follow-up during the contract period is possible by taking samples on one or more occasions, for example. Samples can then be taken on product where the requirement has been defined.
Certification
If the requirement has been verified by means of a certification, follow-up is possible by checking that there is a valid certificate for the food or feed. Certification to Svensk Fågel, Sigill, or other certification or production concept where it is clear that the requirement is met.
Information about the criterion
This criterion cannot be applied in conjunction with organic production requirements, as fishmeal is permitted in feed for organic chickens.
Synthetic amino acids may not be used in organic feed. Therefore, fishmeal is permitted in such feed in order to meet the amino acid requirements of poultry.
Motive
90 per cent of global fish stocks are fully exploited or overfished. Much of the catch is turned into fishmeal for the feed industry. Overfishing can result in the collapse of marine ecosystems and adversely affect marine biodiversity.
Fishing in low-income countries is often carried out by large-scale operators from high-income countries using destructive and fuel-intensive methods, such as the EU’s long-distance fleet, thereby threatening the incomes of low-income countries and the availability of food for their populations.
Besides the environmental aspects, avoiding fishmeal is also an important animal welfare issue.
