There are several major food wholesalers in the Swedish market. These full-range wholesalers offer products a comprehensive selection of goods, including meat, milk, fruit, vegetables, bread, flour and groceries. In addition, they often also offer a wide selection of non-food products such as equipment and accessories, including paper and plastic products.
Accordingly, essentially only one full-range wholesaler is needed for a municipality to be able to meet its needs.
As with several other European countries, there are relatively few companies that compete in the national market with more efficient logistics solutions and well-established trade relations.
Another reason is that wholesalers buy and sell many perishable goods, including fresh produce, which benefit from shorter transportation routes. Groceries are less sensitive in storage since they are often preserved, dried or otherwise well protected from aging. Having several companies in the market is regarded as positive in maintaining a healthy level of competition.
