It is important to plan and minimise the need for transportation. There is a perception that transportation is one of the major climate offenders in the food chain. This, however, is a misperception. In terms of animal-based food (meat, milk and eggs), transportation only comprises a fraction of the total emissions, compared with the emissions of the actual animal husbandry.
In terms of plant-based food (fruits, vegetables, grains), the emissions from transportation in relation to the production are considerably greater, since the farming of plants has less impact on the environment than animal-based foods. In other words, generally speaking, transportation plays a greater role in overall climate emissions for plant products than it does for animal-based products.
