The development of resistance is associated with the overuse of antibiotics and it is therefore important that antibiotics are not used for preventive purposes in livestock production.

Criterion text
Antibiotics must only be used when prescribed by a veterinarian and when doing so is medically justified. Documented routines for antibiotics use must exist at production level and be available on request.

Motive
Antibiotics are a drug used against bacteria. The development of drug-resistant bacteria is a major international growing public health problem and is closely associated with the overuse of antibiotics. The drug should therefore only be used in a rational way, i.e. with the right dosage, dosing intervals and duration of treatment. Antibiotics must thus not be used unnecessarily, but only for the purpose of curing disease.
The use of antibiotics is regulated by Directive 2001/82/EC on the Community code relating to veterinary medicinal products, as well as Directive 90/167/EC laying down the conditions governing the preparation, placing on the market and use of medicated feedingstuffs in the Community. The provisions imply that antibiotics must not be used unless medically justified by a veterinary physician. However, there are big differences between countries when it comes to antibiotic use in livestock production.
