Climate certification of food

There are currently two key global environmental issues, which are partly related:

  1. global warming
  2. the human consumption of fossil fuels, which is a finite resource.

Climate certification for food is a certification system for the production and distribution of food, which handles matters related to both of these issues.

Climate and energy matters are related since a more efficient consumption of energy and switching of energy sources from fossil fuels to renewables reduces the amount of carbon emissions generated by energy consumption. Food production also generates significant quantities of methane and nitrous oxide from various processes.

Under the climate certification system, requirements are stipulated on measures that limit the climate footprint of the production and distribution of food, thus reducing the emissions of carbon, methane and nitrous oxide. A fundamental requirement for affiliating with the system is that the operation also has another quality certification, which calls for basic requirements on environmental protection, animal care and social responsibility.

This is based on the fact that the climate and energy only constitute part of the important environmental and survival matters that must be attended to. Promoting long term sustainable development requires simultaneous environmental, ethical, animal care and social welfare practices.
