Environmental goals
Motive
Criteria for organic products help to achieve the environmental quality objectives of A Toxin-free Environment and Rich Plant and Animal Life.
EU rules on organic production cover the production, processing, storage and import of organically produced agricultural products, including aquaculture products, and foods.
In the case of organic chicken production, the animals shall have access to outdoor areas and their feed shall be organically produced. Organic chicken production means that the rearing time is longer than if the same breed is used as in conventional production. In conventional production, chickens are slaughtered after 5–6 weeks. Organically produced chickens are slaughtered at 81 days of age, but may be slaughtered at another time when slow growing breeds are used.
The advanced criterion for organic chicken and eggs emphasises additional added value beyond the EU-wide regulatory framework. These include extended requirements for chickens to have the opportunity to spend time outdoors and have access to activities in order to promote their natural behavioural patterns.
