Emissions from upholstery materials
Upholstery materials may contain hazardous substances and this requirement helps to reduce their use.
- Technical specification
Upholstery materials shall meet the emission requirements as per the following table.
|Substance or group of substances||Limit (mg/m3)|
|Formaldehyde (CAS-no 50-00-0)||0.1|
|Toluene (CAS-no 108-88-3)||0.1|
|Styrene (CAS-no 100-42-5)||0.005|
|4-vinylcyclohexene (CAS-no 100-40-3)||0.002|
|4-Fenylcyclohexen (CAS-no 4994-16-5)||0.03|
|Chloroethylene (CAS-no 75-01-4)||0.002|
|Volatile Aromatic Hydrocarbons (VAH)||0.3|
|Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)||0.5|
Sampling shall be carried out in accordance with SS-EN 16516:2017/A1:2020 "Construction products – Assessment of the release of hazardous substances – Determination of ammonia emissions in indoor air" or equivalent standard.
When requested, the supplier must be able to present for example one of the following:
- Labellings that meet the requirement, such as a valid license for
- Svanen (Nordic Swan Ecolabelling), Furniture and furnishings, version 5 or later,
- Oekotex Standard 100 (product class I, II, III, IV) 2019-2021,
- The company's self-declaration/supplier assurance including technical documentation of compliance verified by an accredited verification body, accredited for the task according to ISO/IEC 17029, or equivalent standard.
If the requirement has been verified with a labelling, verification can be carried out by checking that there is a valid license for the product in question. This is checked on the respective website: Svanen (Nordic Swan Ecolabelling), Ökotex, CertiPUR.
If the requirement has been verified with analytical reports, conduct random checks of the analytical reports and verify that the values are below the requirement’s limit value. Also check that the analyses were carried out by an accredited laboratory.
Self-declaration verified by an accredited verification body
Request the company's self-declaration including technical documentation of compliance verified by an accredited verification body, accredited for the task according to ISO/IEC 17029.

Information about the criterion
There are currently no accredited verification bodies according to ISO/IEC 17029 (Conformity Assessment – General Principles and Requirements for Validation and Verification Bodies), as it is a relatively new standard. However, this may change, especially if the demand to verify compliance in this way increases. This possibility is therefore included in the list of possible evidence. More information about the standard can be found on Swedac's website.
The version date indicates when the sustainability criterion was created or last updated. Last reviewed dated tells when we last checked that the sustainability criterion still is relevant.
