Furniture is often composed of many different types of materials. These may include wood, wood fibre boards, metals, plastics, leather/skins, padding materials, textiles and glass. Many materials and treatments contain substances that are hazardous to the environment or health, or which entail substantial chemical use or emissions during production. Furniture with a short service life burdens the environment because it is thrown away after a short period of time and then must be replaced.

The goal is to widen the spectrum of users to achieve as good accessibility for as many people as possible. Criterion information Furniture warranties can help to extend service life. The warranty shall be valid from the date on which the product is delivered to the contracting organisation. The warranty shall primarily cover repair. Where this is not possible, the warranty shall cover replacement and include a service agreement with the possibility of on-site collection and return. The warranty shall be valid provided that the product in question is used for the intended purpose under normal wear and tear conditions. The supplier shall, on request, and within [ten (10) working days or other time determined by the contracting organisation] provide a warranty as described above. In the above cases, where parts do not need to be labelled, details of the polymer type and any additives, in accordance with the requirements of SS-EN-ISO 11469:201g and SS-EN-ISO 1043:2011 /Amd 1:2016 (Part 1-4) or equivalent standard, shall be made available on request and in written form. Criterion information Surface treatment products used for furniture may contain hazardous substances that can cause, for example, cancer, damage to the genome, impaired fertility and birth defects. This requirement helps to reduce the use of these products. Surface treatment products used with furniture may also contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which contribute, among other things, to the greenhouse effect and to the formation of ground-level ozone, this requirement helps to reduce the use of these substances. The requirement should not be used if there is a need for repeated disinfection of the furniture. Criterion text The furniture shall not be surface treated with such products that are classified, either in EU-binding classification or in case of self-classification, with the following hazard statements as per Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging (CLP Regulation)1.
Surface treatment with chromium or nickel Products supplied in accordance with the contract shall also not be surface treated with surface treatment products containing chromium III or chromium VI. Components intended for regular contact with skin (e.g. armrests) should not be surface treated with chromium or nickel. NOTE! The surface treatment of metals with trivalent chromium (III) in combination with nickel and/or zinc is acceptable for components (for example, the underframe, legs) of stackable furniture, folding furniture or furniture that may be subjected to heavy wear and tear intended for, in particular, public environments. Exceptions: small parts/components such as staples, screws, nails, hinges or fittings corresponding in total to <5% by weight of the total weight of the furniture are not subject to the requirement. VOC Exception: if the total amount of VOCs applied is less than 5 % by weight of the total amount of the applied surface treatment product OR if the amount of VOCs applied is a maximum of 60 g/m2 of the surface calculated on the total surface or coated surface (e.g. laminate, linoleum, melamine film). The content of formaldehyde in the glues used in the furniture shall not exceed 0.2% by weight. The requirement applies to glue without added hardener. This does not apply to electrical components (e.g. electrical cables), hospital-grade waterproof PUL fabric, urine-resistant fabrics and woven plastic/synthetic leather on furniture intended for a care environment where the regular use of isopropyl alcohol for cleaning purposes is required. Criterion information The contract terms on the basic level aim to ensure that the supplier has effective risk management regarding workers' rights under the ILO core conventions in its own operation as well as in the supply chain regarding subcontractors who are directly involved in the performance of the contract. Criterion text 1. The supplier's obligation Throughout the entire contract period, the supplier shall apply the contract terms under item 1-4. The contract shall be fulfilled in accordance with the following terms regarding workers’ rights:
The terms regarding workers’ rights are called “the Terms” hereafter. In the event of the core conventions of the ILO are in conflict with national law, the supplier shall take reasonable measures to ensure compliancy with the international regulations. The obligations concerns workers when they perform work within the frame of the contract. The supplier shall, according to item 2, ensure that the Terms are fulfilled by hired subcontractors that directly contribute to the performance of the contract, regardless of the number of intermediaries. In addition, the supplier shall ensure that these subcontractors participate in the follow-up, The obligations concerns work carried out under such conditions where Swedish labour law is not applicable. 2. Policies and routines To fulfil the obligations under item 1, the supplier shall take measures to prevent and manage any deviations from the Terms according to item 2.1-2.6 below. The measures shall be documented and applied throughout the entire contract period in their own operation and the operation of any subcontractors who directly contribute to the performance of the contract, regardless of the number of intermediaries. At the start of the contract the supplier shall have: 2.1 adopted a commonly accessible policy, adopted by the highest management including a commitment to respect the Terms, 2.2. adopted routines to convey their commitment to respect the Terms in their own operation and in the supply chain, 2.3 appointed a manager at the highest management level, responsible for compliance with the Terms, 2.4 adopted routines to regularly carry out risk analyses, i.e. to identify and prioritise current and potential risks of deviation from the Terms, as well as mapping the supply chain with special regard to high risk operations, 2.5 adopted routines for regular follow-up of the Terms compliance, and 2.6 adopted routines to immediate action to prevent and limit deviations from the Terms, and to make amendments to identified deviations. Follow-up [The contracting authority] has the right to follow-up that the supplier fulfils its obligations. Criterion information The terms regarding sustainable supply chains aim to ensure that the supplier has efficient risk management in their own operation and in the supply chain, covering the areas human rights, labour rights, environmental protection and anti-corruption. Criterion text 1. The supplier’s obligation Throughout the entire contract period, the supplier shall apply the contract terms under item 1-4. The contract shall be fulfilled in accordance with the following terms regarding human rights, workers’ rights, environmental protection, and anti-corruption (sustainable supply chains):
The terms regarding sustainable supply chains are called “the Terms” hereafter. When international regulations prescribe a stronger protection for the individual than the national legislation, the supplier shall take reasonable measures to ensure compliancy with the international regulations. The obligations concerns all operations connected to the performance of the contract. The supplier shall, according to item 2, ensure that the Terms are fulfilled by hired subcontractors in all parts of the supply chain. In addition, the supplier shall ensure that these subcontractors participate in the follow-up, according to item 3. 2.
