Fuel

Fuel is one of the industrial sectors responsible for the by far greatest emission of carbon dioxide, as far as sales to the public sector are concerned (The Swedish EPA's report 5903 Konsumtionens klimatpåverkan [The effect of consumption on the climate]). Another significant environmental impact resulting from the production of fuel is the usage of water and pesticides, and the effect that these have on land and aquatic environments.
It is important that demands are made of both renewable and fossil fuels. The raw materials used to produce fuel have a significant impact on overall carbon emissions, but also on biodiversity. The fuels currently available on the market differ both in terms of production method and climate impact, and there is therefore great potential for contracting authorities to choose a more environmentally beneficial alternative. For more information about each individual criterion, see the "Justification" text.
The criteria for fuel are intended to be used in the procurement of fuel. The criteria can also be used, either in their entirety or partially, in the procurement of services and contracts where the majority of the environmental impact results from fuel, such as bus and cleaning contracts.
