Noise level
Level: Core
Sound from the projector does not result in environmental effects but can be experienced as disturbing by the user, especially if the working environment otherwise is quiet. The largest source of sound from projectors is the fan. By setting requirements on noise levels, sound can be reduced and a better working environment be achieved.

Criterion text
The declared A-weighted soundpower level LWAd must not exceed the limits in the tables below.
The sound power level for eco mode must be at least 0,2 B(A) lower than the declared sound power level during normal operating mode.
Declarerad A-weighted sound power level LWAd shall be measured according to ISO 9296:1988 and declared according to ISO 7779:1999, unit bel (B) or decibel (dB), or equivalent standards.
Image size Amax/office
Size | Sound power level LWAd |
≤ 3 m2 (~1 900 lumen*) | ≤ 5,0 B(A) |
≤ 6 m2 (~3 800 lumen*) | ≤ 5,5 B(A) |
Image size Amax/video
Size | Sound Power level LWAd |
≤ 6,6 m2 (~1 900 lumen*) | ≤ 5,0 B(A) |
≤ 13,3 m2 (~3 800 lumen*) | ≤ 5,5 B(A) |
* Equivalent light output setting where products fulfil picture quality requirements according to Amax (often lower than max light output).
Verification
The supplier shall, upon request, be able to present any of for example the following:
- Valid license for example the following label:
- TCO Certified projectors, generation 9.
- Test report verifying that the projector's noise level fulfils the requirement and is performed according to the standards in the requirement.
- Other documentation verifying that the requirement is met.
Proposed follow-up
Labelleing
If a supplier uses an ecolabel to prove that the requirement is met, it must be ensured that there is a valid license, certification or equivalent for the product in question. This can be checked: TCO Certified.
Test report
Check the technical documentation for noise level to verify that the requirement has been met. The documentation may consist of test reports where the noise level of the projector has been tested I accordance with standard ISO 9296:1988 and declared according to ISO 7779:1999 or equivalent standards. Follow up on the test reports to make sure that they have been performed in accordance with the requirement.
Information about the criterion
The requirement for noise level is measured at a pre-determined image size and image quality to reach comparable results.
In order for sound to be comparable it has to be measured and declared according to standards (ISO 7779 and ISO 9296). In these standards there are two key conceptions when it comes to comparison of sound: sound power and sound pressure. Sound power (LWA, B, bel) is the only objective way to describe how much sound is emitted, independent of surroundings and distance. Sound pressure (Lp, dB, decibel) is defined as the sound from an object that we hear at our ear, which means that sound pressure is dependent of the room and surroundings where it is placed.
When testing projectors without a TCO Certified license, the requirement or a specification with information regarding test method needs to be sent to the laboratory performing the test.
Environmental goals
Motive
Humans are affected by noise in a variety of ways. Sound that is not desirable for a listener is described as noise. Noise can be hear impairing, disturbing, be the source of different physiological reactions and give sleeping disturbances. Noise can also make a work task more difficult to perform and therefore reduce work performance. Eliminating or reducing noise in a workplace is profitable. A safer and healthier working environment lessens the risk for cost from working absence, accidents and employees that are not able to work with full capacity.
