By increasing the efficiency of energy use and replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy, the climate impact of cultivating fruit and vegetables can be reduced. Choosing products that have been grown in agreement with such terms is a way of contributing to a lower climate impact.

Criterion text
Fruit and vegetable products from open-field farming or greenhouse cultivation shall be produced in accordance with the following terms:
- An energy assessment and an energy efficiency plan that cover the direct energy consumption during the production of the product must be available.
- 100 per cent of any purchased electricity shall be origin labelled and from renewable energy sources1.

Verification
Upon request, the supplier shall be ready to present for example, one of the following:
- Valid licence/certificate for a label/certification that covers the requirement, for example Svenskt Sigill Klimatcertifierad/IP Sigill Frukt och grönt Klimatcertifierad [Swedish Seal Climate certified/IP Seal Fruit & Vegetables add on Climate Certification], or equivalent.
- Other documentation, for example the producers' energy assessment including an energy efficiency plan, along with a valid electricity contract showing that the requirement is met.
Proposed follow-up
This requirement can be followed up, for example, by carrying out spot checks on delivered food products. This can be done by checking one of the following:
- Valid licence/certificate for a label/certification that covers the requirement, for example Svensk Sigill Klimatcertifierad/IP Sigill Frukt och grönt Klimatcertifierad [IP Seal Fruit & Vegetables add on Climate Certification], or equivalent.
- The producers' energy assessment including an energy efficiency plan, along with a valid electricity contract showing that the requirement is met at the cultivation.

The criterium covers conventionally grown fruit, berries and vegetables. The criterion is at a cutting-edge level and market availability may be limited. Conduct a market analysis to ensure availability.

Fresh fruit and vegetables often lack a unique identification in the form of GTIN and the corresponding article information in the digital system. Therefore, follow-up can require significant resources, for both the purchaser and the supplier.

Environmental goals
Motive
Heating is responsible for the largest proportion of the climate impact from a greenhouse. Through more efficient energy use, along with replacing fossil energy with renewable energy, the climate impact from production can be reduced. In order to achieve fossil-free agriculture it is important that more growers move over to fossil-freeenergy sources, and this requirement aims to provide support for this within public procurement.
The term renewable energy source encompasses energy from, for example, hydropower, wind, solar and bioenergy, in accordance with directive (EU) 2018/2001.
